Patient information

What is spinal shock? Is it where the spine hurts? Does it have anything to do with a low blood pressure?
Neither, really. It is basically a concussion of the spinal cord, that causes temporary loss of sensation, motor, and reflexes.

How does that differ from neurogenic shock? Doesn't neurology, relate to the brain?
Neurogenic shock is caused by an injury to the spine, that is so high, it affects the unconcious stuff your body does, like maintain heart rate, and blood pressure.

Ix
  • Reflexes in the spinal cord:
    • Caudal to the spinal cord injury are depressed (hyporeflexia) or absent (areflexia)
    • Rostral to the spinal cord injury remain unaffected

  • Circulatory shock (do NOT confuse), especially neurogenic shock, which is life-threatening
